Redeveloping the largest Marina in Greece
A Bridge Between the Urban and the Seascape
The Alimos Marina is one of the largest in the Mediterranean and one of the most historic marinas in Greece. As a reference point and an integral part of the Athens waterfront, the redevelopment project of the new Alimos Marina comes to realize the vision of a new tourist destination that will be the natural extension of the city, uniting the waterfront with city life and this under the design umbrella of a green investment in the axes of sustainable development.
The redevelopment of the Alimos Marina, which is set to begin in the near future, foresees, among other things, the possibility of utilizing the land area of 210,000 sq m. for broad commercial, tourist, cultural and sports uses, which allows for the implementation of a comprehensive tourism investment worth approximately €100 million on the rapidly developing coastal front of the Greek capital, with multiple added value, both locally and nationally.
The pioneering plan “meets” the most modern requirements for citizen-friendly developments, while the upgrade of the marine section and the modernization of the infrastructure and boat accommodation services will make the Alimos Marina one of the most modern marinas in the Mediterranean.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
By connecting the coastal front with the city, the New Alimos Marina will be a natural extension of the city
The plan of the new Alimos Marina comes to connect the coastal front with the city, thus creating the surrounding space to ensure visual contact and the essential sense of continuity of the city towards the sea front. Through the new uses and traffic routes, the New Alimos Marina will bring together the life of the city with the life of the sea, with the uses of docking constituting at the same time an economic activity and a “scenic event” for the visitors of the marina.
Low buildings among lush plantings
A first move to pierce the boundary of Poseidonos Avenue is the extension of the axes of the roads, transversely towards the sea front. The traditional structure of the buildings in the marinas will be overturned as the building volumes will be broken up and will create intermediate green spaces that will connect the city with the pier. In this way, a visual continuity of the city with the sea will be achieved. Multiple amphitheatrical green spaces will form a pleasant environment that can host outdoor events.
“Green project” on the axes of sustainable development
Green will be the main protagonist. The presence of extensive greenery and shelters will create the necessary conditions for shade and coolness. The healthy existing plantings will be maintained and enriched with new ones throughout the marina. In addition, all ground-floor buildings will have a planted roof, on the one hand for better bioclimatic function and on the other hand to improve their visibility from the city.
A project accessible and open to all
In the New Marina of Alimos, the existing entrance and exit nodes to the marina will be maintained and more than 800 parking spaces will be added. The coastal bike path will run through the area parallel to the tram lines and will be connected to the marina network at various points. As for the uses, all existing port uses will be maintained and enriched with new ones related to safety and the improvement of the operation of the port. Shops, offices, restaurants, boat rental offices will form a lively meeting, entertainment and sports area, while the Alimos Municipality Art Gallery and the Information Kiosk will also be located.
